39/365: Crush Your Idols and Live Free

"You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below." ~ God (Exodus 20:4)

God is serious about being in first place. This isn't an option, but a requirement of being Christian.

When we turn our back to God and chase cheap idols, we invite hell and chaos into our life.

Can those cheap idols forgive us? Give us eternal hope? Nope. They destroy us --- they are weak and can't save us.

GO DEEPER: Colossians 3: 1-10

NEXT STEP: Take an inventory of anything you've created which kicks God down the ladder. Name them - then crush them.

I believe this is how a lot of Christian men are under attack. It’s so easy to slip into a hobby, relationship, job, etc and lose focus on God as #1. He always has a way of refocusing us and sometimes it’s a painful and hard lesson. Thanks be to God for having our best interest at heart and not giving up on us.

my life has always been chasing false idols. in 2005 I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I was 25 years old, I had multiple things going for me and my life. but after I was diagnosed I lost everything. the only thing I had in my life at the time was God but at the time I did not know he was there. in my last relationship I made my spouse my idol I always wanted to make sure she was happy.I have been shown the way of strength through reading the Bible and other meetings like with therapy and countless others. inreading the Bible and going to Bible studies. it didn't matter what it would cost me spiritually, physically I just wanted to make her happy. 2nd Corinthians 5:7 says "for we walk by faith, and not by sight." (niv) ever since I have put my faith in God my life has improved so much. I can look at myself in the mirror and say I love the man that's looking back at me.

I’m like many of you. I’m my own idol and worst enemy. When I’m focused on God doing as He wants things go a lot better. I have problems when I’m focused on me. Many times I’ll get busy doing things like work or chores and not even give God a second thought until it’s done. God wants to be a part of those things too. I need to refocus sometimes. All things would be done as if I’m doing them for God.

I know that I have idols, I have struggled with putting God first. I act as if God knows my heart so I am ok. I do things that I wouldn't do in front of another person, but I do them in front of God. This is disrespect. This is falling back on my laurels. Oh, I can later ask for forgiveness. Oh, I will quit...next time. I tell myself I will change this later, and usually it doesn't happen until it's too late, I've already caused the harm to myself and others. SELFISHNESS, SELF-CENTEREDNESS ! This is the root of ALL my problems. I ask God to humble me now...before the consequences do ! Thank You Lord for giving me the sense to recognize and have the conviction of the things that I CAN change, please allow me the courage to do so. Serenity to accept the things I cannot change is only a smaller part because I have no power to make anything different about the past except the way I think and feel about it. I am tired of leaning the hard way. God of love and all goodness, help me to follow what Jesus has done for us all.

Jerry thanks for being so vulnerable, I'm in the surrendering phase myself. God most definitely has a purpose waiting for you. Every day the flesh wages war against the spirit and sometimes we need to be refined. I'm speaking from first-hand experience because I have been desiring to attain a more intimate walk with the Holy Spirit. I'm seeing it's more than just saying "I surrender", it's a process. One that God revealed is important for me. I'm thankful God directed me to fasting because through tht he has revealed things/idols tht I need to clear up that's not letting his full spirit come upon me. He is refining me by the power of the Holy Spirit. "lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day" psalms 25:5

I am so grateful for God's forgiveness because without that, I am lost to sin and death. Identifying idols is a daily task for me. Thank you Lord! 🙏❤️

Due to pure political reasons for me refusing to spend taxpayer money for my bosses pet project, I was Fired. I lost all of my State retirement, my wife was in the middle of her third cancer surgery and we lost all of our health insurance and so on and so on. I was very high up on the food chain and my job had became my Idol. At 62 yes old Going from a very nice 6 figure income to 0 in a heart beat was the most devastating thing that ever happened to me. Albert Einstein once said “Adversity introduces a man to himself” Who you really are comes out and I hated what I was seeing. No one would have known I was a Christian and that scared me. I have been on my knees ever since. I’m still devastated. If we don’t remove our Idols… God will.

I’m right there with you guys as “me” as my idol. I can super focus on work and hobby’s which from a world perspective looks really good and successful but when I take some time to focus on God and spend time in His word I can’t seem to stay focused. My mind wanders and I often find excuses to cut it short or skip it altogether. I need to crush my me idol and surrender fully to God

Robert hit the nail on the head by identifying “me” as the biggest idol that most of us have in our lives. Many of us think that we are the best think that has ever came along. This happens especially if someone else gives us a little power. Last year I finally broke down and surrendered myself over to God and while doing so I asked Him to search every part of me and show me what is wrong in my life as He did I looked at the pile in front of me and realized how self centered I had been in many parts of my life. FATHER HELP me TO GET “ME” OUT OF MY OWN WAY.

I have a history of putting relationships in front of God among other things. More like I have a history of putting everything in front of God when life is good and then of course when these worlds things dissolve (I look back and have a lot of blame there since I wasn't allowing God to guide me during those earlier good times) I'd be wrecked. Total surrender to God has given me serenity and purpose. I've never felt purpose this strongly before. I know without a doubt it is because every morning day and night I am going to God with all things good and bad and asking for His hand to be present and guiding. It's quite amazing how I'll have a "random" conversation that will speak so directly to something I'm curious about it. I love you God. thank you for always being perfect. amen 🙌 🙏

I must remember God’s will, not mine. The moment I begin to fight things that are not mine to control, I begin making a mess of things. I can not control other people, and I should not try to make choices for them. I can counsel, advise, educate, but only if they come to me. I can choose to be a source of positivity and encouragement, I can intentionally post enriching content via social media from a place of self experience. There are things I can do, and then many things I should not. Learning the difference, is why I’m here.

Robert, I can relate brother. Dieing to ourselves is not easy. Praise be to God that He gets us. He knows our struggles but more importantly He knows our hearts. Like the apostle Paul said. We do what we don't want to do. Who will save us? Jesus! Bless you brother!

Robert said it right. Me ! That’s an idol. I would say my wife but that comes back to me as well because that is my feelings and not hers. My job and again that’s me. Lord I pray for strength to put away this idol that’s called me. I pray for the wisdom to understand when I place myself on the mantle and not yiu.

My problem is idk what my idols are. Well, I guess I do know at least one: ME!!! I over eat. I don’t want to leave my comfort zone. I’m selfish. It’s probably the main reason my marriage is the way it is. God help me out me to death. No more me. Death to me! Fill me with You Father.
