261/365: Inviting Hard Truth

PSALM 51: For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. ~ Psalm 51: 1-2

Nathan was a close friend and advisor to David. He spoke the hard truth in the hardest of times.

As men of God, we are better when we allow a "Nathan" into our lives. While it hurts to hear the truth, it can humble us before almighty God.

You will build a stronger, more consistent faith with a good friend like "Nathan" watching your blind side.

Who is your "nathan"? Who is speaking truth in your life, even when you don't want to hear it?

My wife is my "Nathan" she is the 1 person I can count on everyday to keep me in check she can see when I am hardening my heart and when I am feeling the pressures of the world. I give thanks for my wife it's cause of her that I've found GOD and have not only strengthened my own relationship with him but also have become the leader of my family that GOD has appointed me to be. GOD has also allowed me to find friendship in other that I work with on a daily basis and I try to be a "Nathan" to them. I can't quote you the verse but GOD has shown me that we hate the sin not the person we preach with love to take the person away from there sins and show them yhe mercy and love of the lord Amen.

We do need a Nathan. Someone who knows us every day and can see the changes that we cannot in our behavior or habits, our interactions. My wife doesn't know she is manic and going banshee. I'm sure I don't realize my craziness. God does work through other people. Tommy, my wife and I will have 30 years September 23rd in 3 years.

It seems to me life is a journey upstream. It takes a lot of work to not only build but even maintain the relationships in our lives, careers, ministry even our walk with God. The moment we relax we start to drift in the wrong direction. In my experience it can take some time to realize I’ve been drifting and that is where a Nathan is so important. Can you imagine where David would have ended up if that had only been the first in many terrible decisions, if he hadn’t had a Nathan to wake him up and get him moving in the right direction again. We probably all have or have had Nathan’s in our lives but are we willing to humble ourselves and listen. It was God that sent Nathan with the message and I believe He sees each of us with the same love that He had for David. Let’s be careful not to ignore it when the Nathan God sends comes to us with the truth

Robert expresses my thoughts exactly. what I’m discovering is that many of us men are too proud to admit that we need each other. We need a Nathan or an Aaron or Hur in our lives. I am too introverted for my own good.

I look back over my life with these new lenses of honesty, and I see where God placed numerous Nathan’s in my life. While I wasn’t ready to hear their message at the time, I remember their honesty now from time to time when one of my many character defects comes out. Clearing out my storage room just yesterday I came across some evaluations some fellow soldiers and I did with each other as part of a leadership course nearly 20 years ago. Two positives and two critiques, that was the assignment. I remember how angry I was reading them at the time, I felt betrayed. Yesterday, I smiled. I had completely skimmed over the glowing positives at the time and focused on the flaws they’d pointed out, that I know now very well were accurate, and could have save me a ton of struggles in leading during the next deployment. I guess my point is, we all have Nathan’s in our lives, the issue is if we’re willing to listen and accept the honesty offered. And, if we are to be a Nathan for others, our effectiveness depends on delivery. Fully truth and fully grace, that was Jesus’s recipe 🙏🏻

Seems like my Nathen may be my wife Sheila as she revealed how far south I had let marriage go with her comment on Thursday. Last night I decided to text her asking her what exactly I did to make her fall out of love with me. My goal is that by our 30th anniversary two years from this upcoming September 23rd that we can renew our vows and restore our marriage. It is my hope as well I can get her to see her side of the problem and before anybody mentions it counseling is not an option as far as she is concerned. Hopefully she will open up and tell me what I have done so I can at least better myself.

I think the best part of swallowing my pride and casting my ego away in order to go to an AA meeting the first time a couple of years ago was this very thing. It was a lot of sunshine and rainbows, but it was also veterans of living a life of service. Those veterans with decades of sober time could very quickly point out or ask set up questions that sparked conversation around a weak area. Especially the ones that had decades of sober time but stayed curious to not only help a newbie out but to even learn from the newbie. It showed me a key in life is to be humble enough to learn from anyone. Much like my multi decade fitness journey. I stay curious to keep learning and a willingness to adopt new regimens that are better fits to my needs today not yesterdays needs. Thank you God for helping me to stay humble and curious. I love you God amen 🙏

Randy-ok-I thought I was the only Cajun on this app!! Good stuff-Berwick La! Agreed Robert-you do need all those roles filled in your life! I also have a group of men that fulfill those roles for me. It’s easier for ex-addicts bc we had to seek these men out or die in our addictions…my sponsor will show up at my door if I go too long without contact-I am thankful for that!
